Students will be introduced to our Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits while also exploring the use of spirits in cocktails.     This course and exam will take place in in-person in Chicago at Binny's Beverage Depot in Lincoln Park. Students will receive their study materials as soon as they register for the course. Once the materials have arrived, please start reading the book and taking notes, making flash cards etc. You  need to come to class prepared having read the book.

D1 Wine Production is the first course Diploma candidates must take before moving on to other units.  It delves into the science of wine to include viticulture & vinification practices as well as maturation, treatments, and packaging around the globe. It is assessed by means of a 90 min open-response exam that  is offered several times a year. The course fee includes online Flex-study Portal, Virtual Zoom Lectures, and exam fee. The Flex-study Portal is an independent study program with quizzes, activities, and a mock exam to help you move through the content. Guided by an online facilitator, the Flex-study Portal also has recorded lectures. The American Wine School Virtual sessions are instructor-led lectures on ZOOM with specific dates and times. All sessions are recorded.

Perfect for people new to the world of wine, this course results in a WSET Level 1 certificate and is a great starting point for most novice consumers. No experience required. The first class is conducted online on Zoom. The second and third classes are conducted in person on the same day. The exam is online, unless you make other arrangements with our office to take the exam immediately after the last class.

Your exam maybe taken in-person in Chicago or online in the comfort of your own home. Please indicate in the comment section which exam mode you would like to sit.
  • This intermediate level course provides information on basic grape varieties, climates, and wine making techniques used in the major grape growing regions of the world. Additionally, the course includes service, storage and tasting techniques. This course results in a WSET Level 2 certificate. No experience required. This course is taught by a live instructor online and is delivered over 6 weeks. Once you register, study materials will be sent to you via regular mail. You can begin studying immediately. A class link will be sent to you via email a few days before the class begins. While the classroom is virtual and contains all the content, materials, and instruction a live class would, students are required to purchase their own wine. A reduction in course cost reflects that additional cost. Since there is no blind tasting associated with the exam, students can taste as many or as little of suggested wines as they desire. The instructor will provide a wine list needed for the class. You may also have class wines delivered to your home via WineJug.
