  • This course covers the classic grape varieties of the world and explores how climate play a role in creating wine styles. As the course progresses, candidates will discover basic winemaking & grape growing choices that influence a wines style, quality, and price. This 7-week course begins with an instructor-led, online launch session on Jan 5, 2023 at 6pm CST to present the course induction and instruct candidates how to use the WSET SAT to write tasting notes. Weekly tasting notes are submitted via email for one-on-one feedback. During the remaining weeks, candidates are free to move thru the program at their own pace to watch pre-recorded lectures, videos, supplemental study aids, and access to ask questions via a student/tutor discussion board. While there is no wine tasting on the exam, students are encouraged to sample a wide array of wines to enrich their studies. A list of suggested wines will be provided and candidates are responsible for purchasing their wines locally. The course exam is offer both online and in-person in Chicago. Candidates must state which mode of exam they would like to sit at the time of purchase. Once an exam preference has been registered, it cannot be changed.
  • This course is for those who have earned the WSET Level 3 in Wines. The virtual D6 Diploma course is an independent research paper on a wine-related topic. Each year on Aug 1st, WSET announces two new topics for the coming academic year. Candidates may selected a topic that interests them and complete a 3,000 word research paper independently. The topic of this paper is Closures. Candidates must register by purchasing this product by Jan 15, 2023. The submission date for a hard copy of the paper is Jan 31, 2023.

  • This course is for those who have earned the WSET Level 3 in Wines. D1 Wine Production is the first course all Diploma candidates must take before moving on to other units.  It delves into the science of wine to include viticulture & vinification practices as well as maturation, treatments, and packaging around the globe. It is assessed by means of a 90 min open-response exam that  is offered several times a year. The course fee includes both WSET Global Classroom and American Wine School Virtual Lectures on Zoom. The WSET Global Classroom is an independent study program with quizzes and activities to help you move through the content. Guided by an online tutor, the Global Classroom does not have lectures. The American Wine School Virtual sessions are instructor-led lectures with specific dates and times. All sessions are recorded. Additionally, the course fee includes a 3 year materials and registration fee.

The first class is an overview of winemaking and grape growing as well as tasting technique. After the Zoom launch class, the remaining three (3) classes will be taught in person in Chicago. Each week, two regions will be explored via instructor-led lectures and tastings. Wine laws, labelling terms, grapes and blends will be discussed along with environmental factors that make each region unique. No experience required. Once you register, study materials will be sent to you via regular mail. A class link will be sent to you via email a few days before the class begins.

  • This course is recommended for those who have earned the Intermediate Certificate, or have a good foundation of wine knowledge. This program is a hybrid course designed to provide candidates with both Virtual (instructor-led lectures and pre-recorded lectures) and In-person classroom instruction. The WSET Level 3 exam consists of two sections: Theory and Tasting. To thoroughly prepare candidates for the exam, the Virtual sessions focus primarily on theory via Instructor-led lectures on Zoom, and the in-person session focus on both tasting and theory. To prepare for the exam, candidates will be asked to submit weekly tasting notes for one-on-one feedback to perfect wine tasting notes using the WSET SAT as will as access to an online practice quiz. We highly suggest candidates order their study materials well in advance of the class to study at home. Flash cards, note taking, and reading the book is a must before class. Successful candidates receive the Level 3 Certificate of the WSET.
