• This course is the second course of a two-course series. Taking Unit 1 is not a prerequisite, but it is strongly suggested.  While the course is designed to be completed in 1 month, student have the flexibility to move through the material at their own pace. Each session is outlined in the online course book, Virtual Wine Companion, with corresponding videos, photos, articles, quizzes, and assignments to reinforce key topics. By the end of the session, candidates will have a sound foundation of the classic grape varieties used in winemaking around the world. Additionally, students will have knowledge of how grape varieties change from region to region. Armed with this information, successful students will be able to anticipate how a wine will taste or what food the wine will pair with just by reading the label. The course culminates with a final quiz to test your knowledge before the classroom is closed.

Students will be introduced to our Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits while also exploring the use of spirits in cocktails. The product knowledge gained on this course will give a significant advantage to those working with spirits in both on- and off-trade alcohol.

Perfect for people new to the world of wine, this course results in a WSET Level 1 certificate and is a great starting point for most novice consumers. No experience required. In addition to the WSET level 1 lectures and tasting, the Level 1 course at Gervasi Vineyard also includes two property tours led by head winemaker, David Smith as well as a glass of celebratory bubbles after the exam.

    The Women in Wine Scholarship was created in memory of Deborah O’Brien, who contributed to the wine community for many years through her passion as a sales representative and student of wine.
