WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines

Level 1 photoThis entry level course provides basic information on basic grape varieties, introduction to wine tasting, food and wine pairing as well as basic service knowledge. Learning Outcomes

Holders of WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines will be able to describe main styles of wines, display a basic understanding of factors that determine style, describe the main characteristics of principal grape varieties, state the correct service temperatures, equipment and glassware for wine service as well as basic food and wine pairing concepts. The final exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. Successful completion of the exam earns students WSET Level 1 Award in Wines certificate.

WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits

Obtaining WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines and Spirits is not a requirement for this course.

Learning Outcomes

Holders of WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits certificate will be able to interpret the labels of the major alcoholic beverages of the world, give basic guidance on appropriate selection and service, as well as knowing the principles of wine tasting and evaluation. The final exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. Successful completion of the exam earns students WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits.

WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines 

This course is recommended for those who have earned the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits certificate, or have a good foundation of wine knowledge. In depth lectures and discussions covering wines and spirits of the world are designed to give a thorough understanding of the principal wines and spirits of the world and their commercial importance. Successful candidates receive WSET Level 3 Award in Wines certificate.

Learning Outcomes

After completing WSET Level 3 Award in Wines program, certificate holders will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal wines and spirits of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and value. Further, they will be able to advise management, answer customer questions and make informed selections of wine and spirits in a variety of situations. The exam is comprised of multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and a blind tasting of two wines.

Advanced Certificate Coursework

While taking/passing WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits is not a requirement for this course, it is highly suggested.

Please note, this course is offered as a full or partial immersion class in most cities. It is suggested that candidates register and receive their study materials 4-6 weeks before the start of the first class to allow for at home study time.

WSET® Level 4 Diploma in Wine & Spirits

This is a specialist qualification where detailed knowledge is combined with commercial factors and a thorough system for the professional evaluation of wines and spirits. The qualification will prepare those who are required to make managerial decisions, interpret information and have a thorough understanding of market trends and requirements in a variety of trade and industry sectors.

The Diploma aims to provide specialist product knowledge and understanding of the global and domestic markets for wines and spirits and develop candidate’s ability to present information in a format suitable for business. The total study time required to earn the Diploma award is (at a minimum) approximately 600 hours resulting in 60 credits (1 credit  = 10 learning hours). Each Unit is assigned a minimum credit/study hours giving candidates insight into the time required to complete each Unit.

Course Requirements:

You must be over the legal minimum drinking age where the course and examination is taken. You will be required to hold the WSET Level 3 in Wines or the WSET Level 3 in Wines & Spirits to enroll in the WSET Level 4 Diploma.

Program Overview

The Diploma qualification consists of 6 units:

Unit 1 The Global Business of Alcoholic Beverages: Unit 1 examines the dynamics of the global market for alcoholic beverages, the local market and the marketing of alcoholic beverages. It is assessed by two papers: 1) a closed-book theory paper (essay) in the format of a case study, and 2) one coursework assignment or research paper on an assigned topic. Minimum 120 hours or 12 credits. 

Unit 2 Wine Production: Unit 2 delves into the science of wine to include viticulture & vinification practices as well as maturation, treatments, and packaging around the globe. It is assessed by means of a multiple-choice examination paper of 100 questions. Minimum 6o hours or 6 credits.

Unit 3 Light Wines of the World: Unit 3 takes in in-depth look at the light wines of the world to include: Northern and Western Europe, Central, South, and South-Eastern Europe, Africa, Australasia, and Asia as well as the Americas. Unit 3 is assessed by 1) a closed-book theory paper of 5 questions, and 2) a practical tasting paper of 12 wines. Minimum 300 hours or 30 credits.

Unit 4 Spirits of the World: Unit 4 focuses on the production of spirits as well as the types and styles of spirits around the world. It is assessed by a combined tasting and theory, closed-book examination, consisting of a tasting paper of 3 spirts and one theory question. Minimum 60 hours or 6 credits.

Unit 5 Sparkling Wines of the World: Unit 5 explores the methods of sparkling wine production as well as the types and styles of sparkling wines around the globe. Unit 5 is assessed by a combined tasting and theory, closed-book examination, consisting of a tasting paper of three sparkling wines and one theory question. Minimum 30 hours or 3 credits.

Unit 6 Fortified Wines of the World: Unit 6 outlines the methods of production of fortified wines around the world as well as defines the types and styles of fortified wines. Unit 6 is assessed by a combined tasting and theory, closed-book examination, consisting of a tasting paper of three fortified wines an done theory question. Minimum 30 hours or 3 credits.

Please note: Unit 1 and 2 MUST be studied at the beginning of a Diploma program because they will provide the knowledge and understanding required to complete the assessments in the product-knowledge units.

On completion of all 6 units candidates will be award the WSET Level 4 Diploma. Successful candidates are entitled to use the letters DipWSET after their name, giving them the recognition they deserve. The Diploma is recommended by the Institute of Masters of Wine for candidates wishing to pursue membership.
